CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
---There is the hypothesis and the research topic has been discussed under this section. The objective of the study is to find out the impact of mathematics on the students of seven grades in one of the government school located in the Northern region of Maldives. There are all together five chapters which includes literature review, research methodology as well as the discussion and the results, finally conclusion and other references with appendices. In the chapter 1, there is also brief discussion on the limitation as well as the significance of the project. In the research part there is sampling with 15 girls and 15 boys of the seven grades. Quantitative analysis has been performed for the data collection through questionnaires while qualitative analysis for the data collected through some interviews along with the classroom observation. The collected data has been analysed using mean as well as grand mean that would have extracted through SPSS. As per the findings, it has been observed from the government schools while there is no significant difference has been found between male or female students on their attitude basis. The researcher thus has recommended that only teachers can assist their students and also spread the awareness to those families of the students on their application of mathematics for the real life, training teachers for managing the large class size. It is also recommended that to train more female mathematics teachers with service as per the role model which can bring the change in case of gender difference.
BACKGROUND
This is most important to have proficiency in subjects, like languages, science as well as in mathematics and that is found as an essential precursor for getting the success in modern society. As per Eshun (1995), it has been found that the attitude towards the mathematics should be “a disposition towards the aspect for mathematics that has been acquired by an individual through his or her beliefs as well as experiences but which could be changed”. It becomes more important while emphasizing on the individual experiences and in those contexts students will interact with each other’s and in that case mathematics becomes a focal point. According to Fraser and Kahle (2007) have given more emphasised on the aspect of research where it shows that there are some should be learning environments within home, school and within the peer group that are accounted for the significant amount for variance of the student attitudes and also within the class ethos, it has a significant impact for the scores that are achieved by the students for their positive attitude towards mathematics (Tabor, 2007). However, it has been observed that most of the cases there is anxiety for mathematics in the school level. Although, those subjects which are taught at the period of students’ educational curriculum, are found extremely important for the future with the particular student. So, as a teacher, I have a responsibility to deliver the subject to students so that they will find interest and motivation for studying mathematics as serious as possible. It has been seen that there are some students who could not pass the subject or take mathematics with negative attitude. Depending on the experience in case of mathematics within school, students should develop the general attitudes along with their nature as well as the value together with their own abilities and most important of development of interest for studying this subject. The attitudes as well as behaviours are found to be measured frequently by using the self-report which are enable to economic survey of method and that will be employed as a large scale that includes the instructional methods. These methods are highly effective with the learners or the students. Moreover, According to Samuelson and Granstrom, attitudes and behaviours of students have also observed to be influenced within school as well as the class room factors (George & George, 2012). Those attitudes are seen as cognitive as well as effective orientation for disposition towards the object, situation, idea or person etc. In some early findings, it has been showed that girls tend to have more negative attitudes for mathematics when the boys will do together with this, attitudes will tend to have negative like pupils will move from the elementary towards the secondary school. It is also important to enhance the general attitude of the class towards mathematics and that should be related with the quality of teaching as well as the social or psychological climate of the class as for developing the positive attitudes requires the individual effort. In this way the anxiety towards mathematics can be reduced through systematic destinations. In addition with the recent evidence has been suggested for the collaborative approaches which will promote the positive attitude among the students. Another attitude will measure the need for substantial refining and that difference the basic approaches based on the definition of attitude towards mathematics. First of all there is a simple definition that will describe that the degree of effect which is associated with the mathematics is called the attitude which is the emotional disposition towards mathematics. After this, three component definitions will allow to distinguish believes, behaviours as well as the emotional response which are the component of attitude (Ayele, 2004).

Place Your OrderAccording to Ma.X and J.Xu (2004) has reported that mathematics has the confidences and also the attitude towards mathematics will be affective Stacey who will find that the students along with their positive attitude for mathematics progress to be more effective behavioural along with the developed conceptual understanding.
It has been also observed that from the very beginning, when the gaining of knowledge was understood that will be beneficial for the person, Mathematics was taught in Maldives along with Arabic and Dhivehi. This education practice is seen before schools as well as the educational centres were built. In the old text books, which were followed until recently, teachers explain the questions which are provided in the book and answer them by looking at the book. However, the new text books are designed for the students to conceptualized and find the answers for themselves with the guidance of the teacher (Akey, 2006).
From different research studies, we have seen that there are different factors which will facilitate the learning as example, readiness, mental health and teachers’ personality or the motivation mental set up. In similar way, the number of studies will indicate that students will learn and achieve the correlated with educational attainment with the concern of parents. In this instance, it has been seen that there are students whose parents had attained less in school and having lower grades, also have low marks in mathematics that those students whose parents has found to attend higher level of education with high marks in mathematics.
Research also finds that there are various factors which will affect the learning of students in mathematics. Some of those factors affect those students in learning the Demographic factors like gender or parents’ educational level as well as socio economic status. As next instrumental factors in curriculum, there are instructional strategies as well as the methods, the competency of teachers and the facilities of school context. There are the third factor which is also an individual factor like self–direct learning to improve the arithmetic ability together with the motivation and concentration (Arslan, Çanl?, & Sabo, 2012).
This research will be a good tool for the management of the schools, teachers and even the parents to understand the issues behind student’s overall attitude towards Mathematics, why students achieve low on this subject and the relationship between the student’s attitude on Mathematics and the students’ academic performance.
In the research methodology, both kinds of researches, qualitative as well as quantitative researches have been carried out.
The target group of the research are the Grade 7 students of one of the government schools in Maldives. From 1979, this education centre has been successfully educating many young minds under the same roof, from grade 1 to grade 7, and recently they have incorporated pre-school age group to the school.
According to the leading teacher of grade 7, the performance of students on mathematics is very low.
Mathematics is a compulsory subject for all the students at the school just like all the other government schools.
The school does not hold special programs on Mathematics specifically, however, the school helps out students in every subject that the student is weak by conducting remedial classes.
SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH
As per the scope is concerned, mathematics is considered as a one of the main subjects which are taught in the school levels. My personnel experience as a students and also as a teacher have given me a very good insight of the issue of student’s attitude on mathematics. There are many students who dislike the mathematics class and at the same time there are various reasons for the attitude. That can be due to the past experience or the past results for the subject mathematics and eventually there is a pressure from the side of parents for achieving the higher marks. The poor marks can also possible for poor understandable of the subject due to the poor delivery of teacher in that subject. According to International Electronic Journal for Mathematics Education (IEJME), anxiety caused by mathematics will be experienced and for that reason the degree of understandable of mathematics within children will be perceive their performance in mathematics as per their level of confidence.
So, the impact on the performance of students, it is very much important to understand the needs of the mathematics firsts and thereby, teachers as well as the school management who will strategize the ways for guiding the students in case of changing the attitude towards positive one. There is better as well as more productive academic performance will be thus achieved through these manners.
OBJECTIVES
The study intends to achieve the following objective:
To determine if there is any effect of attitude towards mathematics on the academic performance of Grade seven students in mathematics.
RESEARCH PROBLEM
It is based on the above mentioned need and importance that I have decided to investigate the role of motivation on mathematics achievement. The title of the paper is;
“THE IMPACT OF MATHEMETICS ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS AMONG GRADE SEVEN STUDENTS OF ONE OF THE GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS IN MALDIVES”
RESEARCH SUBSIDIARY QUESTION
Other than the general objective of the study there are other subsidiary questions and that is to identify the attitude of the students towards Mathematics as well as those factors that affect the learning in the government school of Maldives.
This attitude towards mathematics can be defined as the students’ organized predisposition to think, feel, perceive or behave towards mathematics,
Other objective questions are said as:
-
1. To assess the attitude of the students’ towards mathematics at the secondary school level.
-
2. To examine the status of secondary school students’ for the achievement in mathematics.
-
3. To identify the factors affects the learning of students in mathematics in seven grades.
-
4. To investigate the correlation among the students’ achievement or attitude as well as the factors that affects the learning mathematics in the government school of Maldives.
Based on these objectives the following subsidiary research questions are setting up:
-
1. What are those factors which will affect the learning of mathematics among students in seven grades?
-
2. What is the relationship among the students to achieve the attitude for solving mathematics and the factors that affects for learning the same in the government school of Maldives?
-
3. What will be the status for achievement in students’ mathematics?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
As per the student’s concerned, it is significantly affect the ability in case of learning as well as understanding the subject. Moreover, the anxiety along with the attitude has a great affect so that they will perceive their own competence in the subject of mathematics.
This study thus very particularly is used for addressing the attitude of the student when the mathematics as well as the factors has been affected the learning system for the seven standard in the said school. Thus the paper is designed for helping the society, particularly the parents and also the teachers and other students in in the government school of Maldives.
The paper has been designed for showing the various ways for overcoming the problems associated with the students towards the subject of mathematics in this education centre. This is thus believed is the sense that there would be significant policies which is always been followed in different level of the under secondary education. The knowledge has been thus added with the barriers as well as the possibilities for exploring as well as exploring the barriers encountered. In addition with this, there are other studies which are expected to be indicated for some general problems as well as the needs of the seven standard students who do have positive attitude as well as their achievement in this subject of mathematics. This is thereby, would go to help those students and other associates who are concerned with appropriate measures for minimising the problem in case of teaching as well as the learning mathematics. And, as the final case, his findings of this research will have to lay out the foundations for their further investigation (ERDOGAN, BAYRAM, & DEN?Z, 2008).
LIMITATIONS OF STUDY
There is one instrument that is applied in case of the research, the observation within the classroom on the students’ activity for in spite of having other sections within the school programme for the seven standards student. This is also observed that the behaviour of the students has been found with irregular disciplines in the class. There is the problem for getting the permission from the school is under the observation of the administrative body.
Moreover, the rearrangement of the observed students on the basis of the behaviours as well as variation among the inability of the teacher or the methodology as well as the way of assessment etc. is considered as the limitation in this study. Also, the researchers have utilised the different methods to have a clear picture of the school. In addition with this, the researcher has utilised other options for getting the clear observation for each school. Other than that, there is some problem while interviewed the teachers of mathematics. At the time of appointment for the interview, it is required for another appointment for the day to give any reason which is then coincided with the classroom teaching. Some teachers were found unavailable at the time of the appointment inside the school compound.
Some problems also have been found at the time of achievement test which is taken for the selected students. Those students have not been found to be volunteered while coming and take the test for the opposite shift at the time of learning. The researcher has only come into contacts with those selected students only after the end of their classes in the school time. For more clarity of the research the document review has been followed for the student with no result that would be necessary with the necessary quality for the benefit of the study and also almost all kind of school record which was not been volunteered for giving the information properly. The information which is given by then to the researcher, many of those have shown vague as well as not clear. The review guide thus could not be followed in this study. Additionally, the methods followed for filling the questionnaires by those selected students without any assistance was not found easy. Also, the efforts which has been made in such a way that the questions have been set following a simple guidelines so that any student can understand and also fill up the questionnaires when the researcher as well as some of assistant teachers have played the role of supervisor for helping them by clarifying the questions which are difficult for understand (Garc´?a-Santillan´, Carlos-Castro, & Garduno-Trejo, 2012).
