This course reviews the acquisition, allocation, and management of resources within a firm. Topics include financial statement analysis, financial markets and institutions, investment securities, time value of money, cost of capital, capital budgeting, and financial forecasting. Prerequisites: A "C-" grade or better in each of the following: ACCT 231 and ECON 202 and (ECON 226 or Math 226 or Psyc 201).

Course Objectives

The goal of this course is to orient students to the field of finance. Everyone working in company management should be at least somewhat familiar with corporate finance, including:

  • Understanding of financial accounts, their interrelationships, and application
  • The capacity to analyze discounted cash flows and assess a company's financial performance.
  • Knowledge of risk-return theories and the capacity to apply them to the evaluation of hazardous assets.
  • Knowledge of and aptitude for using fundamental capital budgeting methods, including the ability to calculate project cash flows and assess investment choices.
  • Knowledge of alternate capital sources, aptitude for calculating capital costs, and capacity for analyzing the impact of capital structure and dividend policy on the firm's worth
